Who do you listen to and why?
Do you seek advice from people who actually practice what they preach? Or do you look for people who have the most superlatives (expert, guru, ninja, superhero) in their titles?
The Web in general and Twitter in particular, are full of people touting their “mad online skills.” People will do that when they have no reputation. Once they develop a reputation, it will be evangelized or vilified, depending on performance.
We work our butts off to know as much as we can about social media. But there’s too much for us to know everything. So we’re constantly learning, constantly experimenting. We try to figure out which applications work best in each situation.
A guru needs to learn nothing else. They know all there is to know and can provide a solution for every situation. (We don’t buy that either.)
If you’re wading into the social media pool, be careful. There are some great people offering great advice, but no one has all the answers. Anyone who claims they do is a liar.
