Marmon Mok Architecture honored with Green Building Award
Girl Scout Leadership Center in San Antonio recognized as a model water conservation and efficiency
(May 12, 2009) SAN ANTONIO - The City of San Antonio honored Marmon Mok Architecture with a 2009 Green Building Award. The awards honor commercial builders, residential builders, remodelers, architects and designers and other organizations for advancing green building through innovative design and construction techniques, excellent educational programs and successful advocacy efforts.
Marmon Mok received an honorable mention award in the commercial project category for its design of the Sally Cheever Girl Scout Leadership Center. The center was constructed using nature and innovative architecture to reduce energy costs. The orientation of the center provides a minimal amount of direct solar heat, while preserving mature trees that provide shading for the building. A large rainwater and condensate harvesting system was put in place to help irrigate the landscape of the center. The water conservation feature previously won an award from the San Antonio Water System and has been featured in national green building publications.
“We credit the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas for having the vision and leadership to build a new headquarters that is beautiful, functional, and sustainable,” said Edgar Farrera, AIA, LEED AP, director of sustainable design at Marmon Mok Architecture.
The City chose to present Green Building Awards in part due to Mayor Phil Hardberger’s Mission Verde initiative, a plan to develop a 21st century economy for San Antonio based on sustainability.
“The future of our energy needs as a City and as a nation lies in the policy of sustainability,” said Mayor Hardberger. ”It is time to make San Antonio a leader in this new energy world,”
