I love this time of year. The weather begins to cool, leaves begin to change color and the sound of drumlines and whistles fill the air. It’s time for football and planning.
When I was 9 years old, I went with my parents to see my brother who was in the Plano Senior High School Wildcat Band. While we loved to see the band perform, the football team was real good. That fall we followed the team around, painted the ol’ station-wagon with shoe polish and followed the ‘Cats to Kyle Field where Plano beat La Marque for the first of back-to-back state titles. I was hooked.
I love football. I was at UT when Mack Brown took over and got to see Vince Young lead us to a national championship. My worst football moment was being the Rose Bowl last January . . . and that’s all I’ll say about that. I wait patiently by my mailbox every August for my Longhorns’ season tickets, I haven’t missed a UT home game in almost 5 years.
But now that I’m at KGBTexas .communications, the fall means something different. It marks the time when we begin communications planning for our clients.
Just like football teams, we go to training camp to learn as much as we can on the media environment and what messages will resound in the new year. Two weeks ago, I was at the McDonald’s West Division Public Relations Summit in Arizona for this very reason. We learned best practices and stretched those strategy muscles to put together the best plans for the client. Next month, we show what we learned and developed, and present our 2011 plan to the client. There just won’t be a marching band involved.
We’ve kicked off our planning season, so I ask you . . .
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOT . . . UM, I MEAN . . . PLANNING?
