When I was 20 years old, I joined Americorps as a way to serve my country and receive a grant to help me pay for school. I worked with City Year, a non-profit organization where 17- to 24-year-olds dedicate a year of their lives to make a difference in the communities they serve through tutoring, mentoring and civic leadership. It was here that I discovered my passion for public relations. I volunteered to speak on behalf of the corps members to media from TV to newspapers. And I represented the site at a San Antonio City Council public meeting.
After completing my service with City Year, I went on to receive my degree in public relations from the University of Texas at Austin and the rest is history.
Now that I am a KGBer, I still have the opportunity to work with non-profits and continue to serve my community. One of these non-profits is Tempered Steel, an organization dedicated to promoting national awareness, education and support for our severely injured military members. It is my job to help them raise awareness of their cause, and I am proud to be able to use my skills and experience towards making their goals a reality.
I feel so fortunate to have found my passion and my career through community service and I am looking forward to working great organizations that want to make a difference in the world.
