Making content management bearable

by kgbtexasdmt on March 12, 2012

I once had a problem with other people’s chores.

My clients found updating their websites tedious. Not that I blamed them, but especially since search engines prefer sites with fresh content, frequent content changes are important. We tried scheduling, hiring out and brainstorming before finding two solutions: speed and humor.

At the time, I was building custom content management systems to let people manage their own sites. I was able to streamline the update process. A sluggish system led to lost trains of thought, a common source of frustration.

We also reviewed the CMS’s design. By removing one piece at a time, we discovered fewer than half the widgets on a given page were necessary at any time. Identifying and trimming away extra parts helped people focus on their work.

Texas versus Women’s Health

by kgbtexasdmt on March 9, 2012

The state’s decision to not participate in funding Women’s Health clinics, some of which are run by Planned Parenthood, could now cost Texas taxpayers some $35 million dollars. Late Thursday, Governor Rick Perry said Texas will fund the Women’s Health program itself which means federal monies that used to flow to clinics that provide birth control, breast cancer screenings and pap smears for some 130,000 women in the Lone Star state will stop. Perry did not stipulate how the state of Texas will now pay for this new decision which leaves a great number of questions unanswered for women who receive health benefits as well as the organizations that run them. The new federal rule goes into effect March 14 and unless there is a flurry of state political activity and social work miracles, Texas will lose 90 percent of funding for Women’s Health clinics.

Common mistakes in most health care websites

by kgbtexasdmt on March 8, 2012

An analysis published in the Journal of Healthcare Management, suggests most health care websites struggle to effectively engage their customers. The report evaluated more than 630 websites on four dimensions: accessibility, content, marketing and technology. Not surprisingly, the sites failed on every front.

KGBTexas, both in our work for health care clients and our new business efforts for our Healthcare Solutions Group, regularly evaluates health care websites for (among other things):

Managing a website is no easy task. To have a successful website it is critical to treat it like it is alive — because it is. My first recommendation is to have a sound strategy. Take the time to understand how the online space can help your business and do what you can to add new content, establish relationships with high authority sites, develop a social media presence where your business can make a positive impression on users and offer compelling (share-worthy) information.

With that said, Google is clearly the “panda” in the room so let’s just jump right in and talk about Google’s latest algorithm updates.

Texas Medicaid cuts painful to pharmacists

by kgbtexasdmt on March 1, 2012

Today in Texas, March comes in like a lion, especially for Texas pharmacists who will see an 80 percent reduction in their Medicaid reimbursement for dispensing medications. This move is part of a larger moving effort to convert Texas Medicaid from a fee-for-service payer to managed care. Urban areas such as San Antonio have long had Medicaid managed care in place but for rural Texas, the cuts could very well put the local pharmacist and his/her privately owned rural company, out of business.

Here’s one local pharmacist who is dreading Thursday’s change.

The state has for years overseen medical care, but now it is also being asked to administer the drug benefit as well. In San Antonio we have four Medicaid plans with Community First, which is owned by the University Health System, being the largest with over 90,000 beneficiaries.
