Enough!
I’ve been blogged, Tweeted, texted, emailed, Pinged, spammed, followed, friended, Linkedin and Blellowed enough to last me until the next cool communication tool hits my Mac or cell. Which will likely be sometime next week.
I’m not a Luddite. It’s just that I find it difficult enough to keep up with my day job — being a creative director for KGBTexas. As long as there are jobs in the house, I am in a constant state of “concept.” I take my work home with me. It rides with me in the car. We shower together. And, yes, I get some of my best ideas on…red wine. What did you think I was going to say?
If I tweeted, it would say something like, “Leave me alone. I’m on a deadline.” My Linkedin page wants me to tell people what I’m working on. Sorry. It’s classified. And if I took the time to tell you about it I wouldn’t be working on it then, would I?
With the advent of all of these new tools, there is a great learning curve. Fortunately for me and KGBTexas, we have several devoted mavens (Andi Narvaez and Sean Wood) who specialize in and utilize social media, to noble and productive ends, on a daily basis in our office. I respect what they do even if I prefer not to do it. Not because I don’t want to learn how. I’m being paid to do something else. I want very much to know what they know.
Thankfully they share their knowledge with the rest of the staff and our clients on a regular basis over brown bag lunches, town hall meeting with interested clients and through regular postings to email. I can’t read everything. I can’t learn everything. But I am learning a lot.
If the work ever slows down enough, I will make the time to learn more. But if the work flow slows too much, I may end up with no reason to learn it.

Great reminder that not everyone needs to know (or use) everything! While it’s important to be cross-trained, sometimes all the new tools can serve as more of a distraction rather than a catalyst for better work. It all depends on your specific job, function, and duties. You’re lucky to have your mavens, and ones who are good enough teachers to share with you all!
